As a childhood photographer, I know one thing for sure: the best smiles aren’t forced—they’re felt. Whether you’re snapping everyday memories on your phone or preparing for a professional session, here are 10 tried-and-true tricks to bring out those genuine, heart-melting smiles (and other adorable expressions) from your little ones.
1. Skip the "Cheese"
It’s a classic line, but it often results in stiff, unnatural grins. Instead, try phrases like, “Say stinky socks!” or “I love ice cream!” Ask silly questions like, “Did someone just toot?” (while making a farting noise) or “Can kangaroos somersault?” to get a real giggle or silly face.
2. Let Them Lead
Kids love to feel in charge. Let them choose a pose, make a funny face, or decide where to stand. That sense of autonomy makes them more relaxed—and that comfort shows up in the photos.
3. Bring a Favorite Toy or Prop
Whether it’s a beloved stuffed animal or a funny puppet, familiar objects can comfort shy kids and even become tools for connection. Bonus: it keeps their hands busy, AND captures that one thing that they loved so much when they were little.
4. Play, Don’t Pose
Some of the best smiles come mid-game. Try a quick round of peekaboo, Simon Says, or “Run to me as fast as you can!” to get movement and laughter all in one shot. Ask them to do a cartwheel, or jumping jacks or some cool dance move they love. The goal is to capture the joy as it happens.
5. Get Down on Their Level
Shooting from a child’s eye view creates connection—and physically being on their level helps kids feel seen and safe, which opens the door to authentic expression.
6. Make It a Conversation
Instead of commanding, “Smile!” ask open-ended, silly questions like, “What would you do if a giraffe walked into our house?” The surprise and curiosity naturally lead to laughter.
7. Use Reverse Psychology
Try saying, “Don’t you dare smile!” or “No smiling allowed!” Most kids can’t resist proving you wrong, and you’ll often get a mischievous grin in return.
8. Enlist a Sibling or Parent
Sometimes the best smiles are sparked by someone the child loves. Encourage a parent or sibling to stand behind you and do a funny dance or whisper a silly secret.
9. Capture the In-Betweens
Don’t just wait for the perfect pose—shoot during transitions, giggles, and tiny moments of joy. Often, the most genuine smiles happen when they think you're not taking a picture.
10. Know When to Take a Break
If your child is tired, hungry, or just not feeling it, no amount of tricks will work. Take a snack break, offer a cuddle, or try again later. The best photos come when kids are happy, not pushed.
